Ratu’s name means “queen,” and she has become one of the most important rhinos in the story of Sumatran rhino conservation.
Born in the wild in Indonesia, Ratu left a protected area and found herself in a dangerous situation near local villages. To keep her safe, a team of rangers, veterinarians and keepers rescued her and brought her to the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary (SRS), where she would go on to play an extraordinary role in the effort to save her species.
In 2012, Ratu and Andalas welcomed Andatu, the first Sumatran rhino born at a breeding facility in Indonesia. Four years later, Ratu gave birth to their daughter, Delilah. Today, both Andatu and Delilah have become parents themselves, making Ratu a grandmother and creating a remarkable three-generation family at the SRS.
And Ratu’s family continues to grow. She is pregnant again, with her next calf expected in May 2027. With so few Sumatran rhinos remaining, every successful pregnancy and birth is critically important to the future of the species.
By symbolically sponsoring Ratu, you help support the specialized care, nutrition, veterinary monitoring and protected forest habitat that she and the other rhinos at the SRS need to thrive.
You can symbolically sponsor Ratu, either in your own name, or as a gift for a relative or friend who supports wildlife conservation.
