Sponsor Harapan the Sumatran Rhino

Sponsor Harapan the Sumatran Rhino

Sumatran rhinos are the smallest and hairiest of all rhino species. They live in the dense, tropical forests of Indonesia and are Asia’s only two-horned rhino. Harapan is well known in the United States as he was born at the Cincinnati Zoo and captured the hearts of all who were lucky enough to meet him. Harapan made the 10,000 mile journey to the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary, a research and breeding facility managed by the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Way Kambas National Park and local NGO Yayasan Badak Indonesia,  in 2015 to become part of the breeding group there. After almost eight years of attempts, Harapan is finally a dad!

The rhinos living at the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary serve as ambassadors for their wild counterparts, and as instruments for education for local communities and the general public. They also comprise an ‘insurance’ population that can be used to re-establish or revitalize wild populations, once threats have been eliminated in their natural habitat.

You can symbolically sponsor Harapan the Sumatran rhino either in your own name, or as a gift for a relative or friend who supports wildlife conservation.
