Sponsor Andalas

Andalas has been making Sumatran rhino history since the day he was born.

Born at the Cincinnati Zoo on September 13, 2001, Andalas was the first Sumatran rhino born in captivity in more than a century - the result of years of groundbreaking reproductive research and collaboration between conservationists in Indonesia and the United States. His name is an ancient Indonesian word for the island of Sumatra.

In 2007, Andalas made the journey from the United States to the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary (SRS) in Indonesia’s Way Kambas National Park. There was no guarantee that a rhino born and raised in a zoo would successfully adapt to life in the forest and become part of a breeding program. Andalas did both.

He and Ratu welcomed their son Andatu in 2012 - the first Sumatran rhino born at a breeding facility in Indonesia - and their daughter Delilah in 2016. Today, both Andatu and Delilah have produced calves of their own, making Andalas a grandfather and extending the conservation legacy that began with his historic birth in Cincinnati.

Andalas has also fully embraced life in the Sumatran forest. He is known for making his own mud wallows and foraging for plants and twigs in his large, natural enclosure at the SRS.

From a 70-pound calf who captured worldwide attention to a father and grandfather helping build a future for his species, Andalas represents what decades of science, collaboration and persistence can accomplish.

By symbolically sponsoring Andalas, you help provide the expert care and protected forest habitat that he and the other rhinos at the SRS need to thrive.

You can symbolically sponsor Andalas, either in your own name, or as a gift for a relative or friend who supports wildlife conservation.
